The most common henna questions

How long does the henna last?
Short answer: 1 - 3 weeks
Long answer: it depends on the location of the henna, how well you follow the aftercare instructions & the type of skin you have.
Areas of thicker skin means it takes longer for the henna to exfoliate away. Palms of the hand 3 weeks; forearms 2 weeks; shoulder 1.5 weeks; face 3 - 4 days. Type of skin: dry vs moist. Ex: the back of my hands are extremely dry & will start to exfoliate off in only 1 week, by my wrists & fingers will keep a beautiful stain for 2.5 weeks.

What colour will it be?

Henna is traslucent, so the colour depends first on your first colour, then on where it's applied.  The thicker the skin, the darker the stain will appear. So on caucasion skin, the stain on fingertips, palms & bottom of the feet can appear dark plumb-cherry.  On the hand of hands & forearms, a rich reddish brown. On the torso, a lighter orange-brown. On the face, the colour of light freckles. On darker skin tones, the stain tends to have more of a plum tone instead of orange, same darkness rules apply as above.
The final colour, again, will also depend on how well the aftercare instructions are followed, personal body chemistry & potentially medications.

Can I get black henna or another colour?
No. There's no such thing as "black henna" or henna in another colour.  Those will be toxic chemical products being (falsely) called henna.
Henna is a plant, there's only one dye molecule.
The temporary black skin stain product is *illegal* in Canada, as it causes cancer, organ failure & permanent scaring.

Can I go swimming?
If you want a good stain, avoid the water for 2 days after you get your henna applied.
Lake water / salt water: you can swim if you protect your henna stain with a thick oil / butter: butter, lard, tallow, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter.  Pools: chlorine is a bleach, so expect your henna stain to be completely bleached out within 15 minutes in a pool.

What damages my henna stain?
Exfoliation (skin brushing, scratching, shaving), water, chlorine (pools, hot tubs), anti-oxidants (vitamin E, rosemary extracts in products), petroleum based products (standard lotions, sun screens, vaseline, baby oil).

Should I get henna before going on vacation?
If you're likely to want to get henna when you're away (especially the kids), then absolutely. 99% of vacation & play destinations have fake, chemical henna (like the crap found at Wonderland or Sauble Beach). Most "henna" in other countries is the toxic black chemical - very dangerous!
Book your henna the day before or 2 days before you leave. Then your henna will be at it's full colour for when you reach your destination.

If henna doesn't come in different colours, why do you sell henna hair dye kits in different colours?
To dye hair auburn, brown & black, the indigo plant is combined with henna. Indigo is the plant that provides a blue dye - what blue clothes were originally coloured with before synthetic dyes were created.  For blondes & strawberry blondes, henna is combined with the cassia plant (a light golden yellow dye).
So it's not henna alone creating those different colours.

What is "white henna" that I see on the internet?
This is actually just a fancy type of glitter tattoo.
Instead of using a stencil & chunky glitter, the liquid adhesive is freehand drawn on & covered with cosmetic mica (what colours makeup). The proper name for this type of body art is 'gilding' among professional henna artists. If can be done in any colour of mica or glitter that you have. I sell the supplies for this.

Can I do gilding in an appointment?
Yes, but it doesn't last as long as henna & you have to be even more careful with it. So typically it's saved for a special even like weddings & proms.

Can I use henna over colour treated hair?
If you use 100% pure, real, body art quality henna, yes. But I always recommend doing a strand test first!
